Partial Hospitalization Program
What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an outpatient treatment program designed to help those overcome their substance abuse issues. This form of outpatient treatment is similar to an inpatient treatment program in that treatment is fully immersive and intensive, yet it differs in that clients can return to their own homes after treatment. A partial hospitalization program may be helpful for those who live a busy life and have outside obligations that require them to leave the facility.
Various factors are considered when determining if a partial hospitalization program is right for you, such as addiction history, drug of choice, the severity of drug use, and present mental health challenges. Before starting a partial hospitalization program, clients will work with an addiction treatment specialist to create a custom treatment plan that meets their recovery goals and addresses their recovery needs.
Who Can Benefit from a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A partial hospitalization program is ideal for clients who are seeking comprehensive addiction treatment but with the flexibility of returning home after each treatment session. Partial hospitalization programs are ideal for those with family obligations they must tend to, which require them to return home at the end of the day. PHP allows clients to build the skills they need to overcome their addiction and prevent future relapse.
Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) vs. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
The most significant difference between the two therapies is the duration. Both treatment programs take place at our rehabilitation center for a set number of hours throughout the week; however, during an intensive outpatient program, clients will spend less time in treatment than those in a partial hospitalization program.
PHP is a more intensive form of addiction treatment than intensive outpatient treatment or standard outpatient programs. When enrolled in a partial hospitalization program, clients spend most of the day at our rehab center in treatment, whereas intensive outpatient programs require clients to attend treatment for several hours throughout the week, depending on their custom treatment plan.

What Can I Expect From a Partial Hospitalization Program?
The average day during a partial hospitalization program includes individual and group therapy sessions, educational courses on relapse prevention and skill development, and periodic evaluations. All of this is done with the help of qualified addiction treatment specialists and mental health professionals.
Developing support systems is essential for recovery. For those in partial hospitalization programs, it is strongly recommended that clients return home to a supportive, healthy, and drug-free environment. Having people that love and support you during treatment can be the difference between a successful and difficult recovery journey.
Various forms of therapy are offered during a partial hospitalization program at Next Step Recovery including group therapy, individual therapy, DBT, CBT and more. These therapeutic modalities are extremely effective in the addiction recovery process as it helps individuals uncover any underlying issues that may be contributing to their addiction and opens the door to healing.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) focuses on helping clients understand and regulate their emotions. Focused areas include emotional control, mental mindfulness, and behavioral health performance.
Fundamentally, DBT focuses its practice on a radically accepting process in which clients learn to accept their feelings without judgment. Our team of mental health professionals play an essential role in DBT.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is where a client works with a licensed therapist to diagnose the root cause of their substance abuse issues. Therapeutically, clients can reduce negative thinking patterns and replace them with healthy, positive habits. These therapeutic techniques help clients understand the challenges they are facing and develop the tools to prevent a relapse in the future.
Are PHP Treatment Programs Right For Me?
If you are looking for a comprehensive substance abuse treatment program but which to return home at the end of each treatment session, then a partial hospitalization program is an excellent choice for addiction treatment. A partial hospitalization program offers everything that a residential program would have aside from room and board. It may be ideal for most patients to receive residential care, but it might be unrealistic for others. It is important to remember that each individual has their own unique needs, which depend on a variety of factors.
PHP is also an ideal option for those who have recently completed an inpatient treatment program and are looking to start another, lower level of addiction treatment.
Comprehensive Care in Your City
When choosing a partial hospitalization program, it is essential to understand the time needed to dedicate to addiction treatment. If you are battling substance abuse and are looking for an intensive outpatient program but need to return home at the end of the day, then a partial hospitalization program may be the best option. Every person and recovery journey is different and requires a different treatment approach. At Next Step Recovery, we are here to help you find a treatment plan that meets your needs and recovery goals.
